Weekly Blog #1 – and Build of the Week

Howdy folks! So I’ve put together a tentative schedule for content releases, as follows:

  • I’ll be releasing a “Master Guide” every week (until I run out of mechs) every Monday.
  • Every patch day where something actually changes (so for the most part, every other Tuesday), I’ll either write something up or, hopefully, make a short video discussing how this changes the game on a competitive and a PUG level.
  • The day after a major patch (so basically every other Wednesday), I’ll be releasing an update to the tier lists with (again hopefully) a video explaining the changes.
  • And every Saturday I’ll be releasing a blog post (like this one!) along with a “build of the week”, where I make something interesting in Smurfy’s for you fine folks, and basically treat it like a teeny tiny Master Guide, but just as a fun little exercise.
  • There’s also a good chance that I’ll sprinkle in one-off articles or miniseries (after re-reading this, I was like when the fuck did i right miniseries?! Then I realized I meant to say mini-series. And then I realized where mini-series probably comes from. So fuck it, it’s staying miniseries!) randomly as well, in addition to updating old ones and generally improving the site.

So this is the first blog post! Some of them might not have much information but I suppose this one does. First of all, everything I already said. Second of all, an update on my situation. As some of you may know, I’ve been suffering for the last few days from the lack of a dedicated graphics card, instead having to play on my 3570K’s IGPU. As I’m sure you can imagine, this has not been pleasant due in part to my maxing out at 30 FPS at 720P and minimum settings, and also in part due to its tendency (90% of the time) to crash when I try to log in. i have sent in my GTX 670 for an RMA as it is still under warranty, and hope to get that back soon but I imagine it will be a few weeks.

However, thanks to the amazing generosity of one of my teammates (not sure if he’d want me to post his name and I’m writing this at 3 AM…), I will be able to play again soon with a borrowed gtx670. This means the potential for regular streaming, more entertaining videos (the backdrop can be gameplay footage rather than my admittedly FABULOUS face), and just general happiness.

Speaking of generosity, I want to extend a special thanks to those who donated to this website. I’m planning on making a page (The Hall of Heroes) for all those who have, So email me ([email protected]) if you want your donation to stay anonymous, but y’all are the best.

Penultimatly, I just wanted to let you all know that I have added the Archives section, it’s in the menu bar right next to the subject of the next and final announcement!

The final announcement (idk why I saved this for last, I probably bored half of you out of reading this far already) is that I’ve added a forums to the site! I’m not a huge fan of the WP commenting system, so I built this as a new way for me to interact with you guys, as well as interact with each other. You’ll see it on the right side of the main menu at the top, and feel free to register and start posting (so far there’s only one post and it’s mine…so lonely 🙁 ). And more importantly, I want feedback from you guys over there, not just on the site (although there is a place for that), but for stuff like recommending/voting for which chassis to make a master guide on next, and now that I think about it, what variant/playstyle to use for the next build of the week.

Anyways I think that the blog part is pretty much done. So let’s get on with the…

Build of the Week!

These generally won’t be 100% optimized because, well, that’s what the tier lists and master guides are for, but I’m gonna try to make them as interesting, fun, and original as I can.

Usually the build will be fresh, something that I’ve built specifically for this post, but for the first one I want to kick it old school. Like, really old school. Like almost 2 years ago old school.

Specifically, I want to introduce the Fister Roboto

I just want to get out of the way first that Trevelyas did come up with a nigh-identical build (named the ggclos3D) independently of me. Just wanted to acknowledge that.

So…this is a mech. And, believe it or not, it can perform…if the situation is right. There’s just a few things you have to watch out for.

  • Strikes
  • Enemy mechs
  • Friendly mechs

And that’s pretty much it. If you can manage to avoid getting hit by those three things, you will find that you can unleash a seriously devastating amount of power on the enemy team. As far as tips on how to play it…

  • Never, ever be in front. Try to play it like a big, slow, ERLL Raven 3L, always poking but never where the enemy is looking. If you pop from the same place more than two times in a row, there’s a good chance you’ll die.
  • Stay with the team, near the middle/back. This is mainly so that you have bodyguards and distractions for the enemy light mechs, because it is damned easy to get taken down by even a single skilled light pilot if you miss one of your shots.
  • Focus the biggest baddest target, always. While the 50 pinpoint damage may be more devastating against a Shadow Hawk than a Dire Wolf, it is more likely to spread over multiple hitboxes or miss entirely, and coring out a 100-tonner in two shots will have a greater effect on slowing down the enemy team than hurting a smaller mech will. Slowing down the enemy team is important because if they push…you are just…so dead. This isn’t to say to ignore anything smaller than a Banshee though, just…when choosing between targets, go for the bigger one in general.
  • When in doubt, shoot center mass. You’re less likely to miss.

So yeah, I know I’ve said “devastating” about 12 times but…it really is. It’s like a faster Dire Wolf with jumpjets and…well, no armor, but c’mon who needs that anyways. I hope you enjoy the build and the post, and glhf!

PLEASE GUYS I WANT IDEAS. POST IN THE FORUMS WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO NEXT!
