This might be the start of a new series of which mechs on sale are “worth” picking up. Keep in mind that this is mainly for people who make decisions on buying mechs in terms of how good they are, rather than if they adhere to a chosen playstyle, or how cool they look.
Overheat Sale: From January 27 to February 1
This sale is actually pretty good, the only potential “downsides” being that a) most of these mechs are so good that most people already have them, and b) it’s 35% off instead of 50% off (goddamn it I’m entitled). So without further ado, let’s go over the mechs.
Must-Haves
These mechs are worthy additions to any MechWarrior’s stable; definitely worth picking them up if don’t have them already.
Hellbringer
One of those always-gonna-be-good mechs, due in large part to being the only good heavy mech with ECM.
- HBR-Prime
- HBR-A
- HBR-B
Battlemaster
This chassis is the bomb. Easily a top 5 Assault mech. Unfortunately, part of that is due to its quirks, so if it gets shafted on the quirks in future patches it’ll be mediocre, though I doubt that’ll happen.
- BLR-2C
- BLR-1S
- BLR-1G (BLR-3S is a decent alternative for this one)
Stalker
We’re not quite in the Stalker heyday anymore, but it’s around as good as the Battlemaster and it’s less reliant on quirks, making it more resilient to any future quirk changes.
- STK-4N
- STK-3H
- Misery (Can be substituted for the STK-5M, but the Misery is and always has been one of the best Heroes in the game)
Ebon Jaguar
Brilliant mech all-around. It’s been hurt like all the other clan mechs, but it can fit loads of guns and has a few really high mounts.
- EBJ-A
- EBJ-C
- EBJ-Prime (EBJ-B gives you roughly the same number of useful omnipods, but Prime sounds cooler than B, and it’s cheaper too)
Jagermech
The super-high mounts make this mech really resistant to nerfs and, while it’s not always been a top mech, it’s always been good. Also, the hero is legitimately worth having, though not the star of the chassis.
- JM6-DD
- JM6-S
- FIrebrand (Can be substituted for the JM6-A, though the Firebrand is a nasty mech worth getting)
Griffin
The Griffin is a lot of peoples’ favorite mech, and for good reason. Unfortunately, it is (mostly) relegated to brawling, but it’s amazing at that and it has a really solid hero mech.
- GRF-3M
- GRF-2N
- Sparky (can be substituted out for the GRF-1N, but the Sparky is very strong right now)
Second-Stringers
If you’re not saving up your C-Bills for something specific, these are all worth picking up.
Ice Ferret
It’s not that good, but it is good, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
- IFR-B
- IFR-D
- IFR-A
Gargoyle
The Gargoyle is pretty low on the list to be sure, but it’s still worth getting.
- GAR-D
- GAR-Prime
- GAR-B
Orion
A lot of people might give me flak for recommending this mech at all, but I honestly do think the ON1-V is worth the chassis. Not if you’re still building your collection maybe, but if you’ve already got a solid stock…
- ON1-V
- ON1-VA (The Protector is the second best variant for sure, but not worth buying with MC for most people)
- ON1-K
Kintaro
The Kintaro is, more than the Gargoyle, riding that line of whether or not to buy it. Best for people who really have all of their bases covered already and are just looking for something to blow their bills on.
- KTO-18
- KTO-20
- KTO-19
Panther
The Panther’s kind of in the same place as the Kintaro, on the border of whether or not it’s worth buying at all. A couple builds are interesting or decent or whatever, but I wouldn’t really classify any of them as worth it. I’m only including it in the second-string place for people who fancy themselves light pilots, really.
- PNT-9R
- PNT-8Z
- PNT-10K
Special Snowflakes
These are only really worth getting at all if you’re a completionist or looking for a challenge, or perhaps for sentimental reasons.
Kit Fox
The Kit Fox is in a similar place as the Panther. Prior to the introduction of the Cheetah, I woulda said that it’s worth getting, but right now it just doesn’t offer anything that another chassis doesn’t do better.
- KFX-Prime
- KFX-C
- KFX-S
Commando
Regarded by many (including myself) as the single worst chassis in the game, the Commando doesn’t offer you anything that you really want. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it is, bar none, the fastest mech in the game, beating out mechs like the Locust and Spider by a few KPH.
- Death’s Knell (one of the few reasons to buy the Commando at all is for the Death’s Knell, but if you want the chassis for other reasons you can skip it and go for something like the COM-3A)
- COM-2D
- COM-1D
Lemme know if you want me to do this sort of thing for future sales on Reddit or the Forums.
